« Here, nature makes all the decisions. She makes the wine. We are merely gardeners who respect the work of art drawn out by time, we know that none of it is our creation. We have simply added a little of our own invention, we have planted and nurtured the land. We have been here for 35 years, but la Verrerie is 100 years old, 1,000 years old, 10,000 years old. And all of eternity lies ahead of it. »
Christopher Descours, owner of Château la Verrerie.
WHERE TWO WORLDS CONVERGE
Château la Verrerie stands within the Luberon parc naturel régional. It's just a few miles from Lourmarin, one of Provence’s most beautiful villages. To the north there are the wines of the Cotes du Rhone, including Châteauneuf-du-Pape; and to the south, the Cotes de Provence vineyards. And running through it is the Luberon massif terroir. This outstanding location is expressed through the red, white, and rose wines of the Domaine. The different cuvees reflect the beauty of Provence, and are made in the purest Rhone Valley tradition.
Château la Verrerie stands on the exact location where prehistoric wine vats were found to have been carved out of the rock, and date back 4,000 years. And before deciding to devote itself entirely to viticulture, la Verrerie also crafted glass. As its name suggests (verre means glass in French).
Château la Verrerie made it a point of honour to replant its vineyards with the typical grape varieties of the Rhône and Provence, to give pride of place to the wonderful Syrah grape on the very best terroir, and to convert the entire vineyard area to organic agriculture. All of these decisions underscore our intention to be as gentle on the land as possible. Extract the best, again and again, from this terroir that we want to nurture, like the artisans of a new world: that's our commitment.
In the heart of the Luberon, in Provence, 54 ha of vineyards and 7.5 ha of olive groves. Organic AOP Luberon and IGP Vaucluse wines are produced on one side, and the Domaine’s olive oil on the other. Nature is all around.
Respect for our terroir guides us. Always. We very early converted the estate to the principles of organic farming. Beyond the label, responsible practices imposed by our situation on the borders of the Luberon Regional Nature Park and our love of the plant itself.
