You first need to climb up to see Maxime, la Verrerie's man outdoors, surrounded by vines and countryside. He can show you each spring, he cherishes each old oak, and stops at each well that woodcutters dug out many years ago to reach the clear water that allowed them to survive. He can also show you the mountains: La Trévaresse just opposite, and Sainte-Victoire over in the distance to the south. Further east are the white-capped Alpilles and further still lies the sparkling sea, whose scent the white horses adore.
Everything here exudes respect and love for the plant kingdom: the vines flourish and show off their emerald colours on living, lightly harrowed soil. Healthy, well-spaced fruit thrives under the shade of its leafy shelter, and carefully considered, measured viticulture is practised with intelligence and style, following the principles of organic agriculture.
